On 08/27/06 at 1119 hours, Station 23 was dispatched for an automobile accident on Newark Road south of Spencer Road in West Marlborough Township. Within one minute, Assistant Chief 23 (Testa) and Ambulance 23 were enroute. As Engine 23-1 responded with Lieutenant 23A (Carroll), Chester County Fireboard then upgraded the incident to an auto accident with entrapment, added Medic 94, and changed the location to Newark Road south of Bartram Road.
Asst. 23 located the accident on Newark Road between Spencer and Bartram Roads in the "bad" curves. Two vehicles had collided nearly head on in the middle of the curves and it was determined that one patient was confined within one of the vehicles. Asst. 23 assumed command while Deputy Chief 23 (Cole) took the "Newark Road CP". Ambulance 23 arrived and began patient care. A second ambulance from Longwood Fire Company was requested to transport the driver of the other vehicle. Engine 23-1 arrived on the scene and the crew placed the Hurst Combination Spreader/Cutter hydraulic rescue tool into service. Under the direction of Asst. 23 and Lieutenant 23A the crew removed the driver's door to extricate the patient. Once the patient was removed they were packaged and transported to Christiana Hospital with Ambulance 23 and Medic 94. The driver of the other vehicle was transported by Longwood EMS to Chester County Hospital. The crews cleared the roadway of debris and assisted with traffic control until the vehicles were towed from the scene.
