08/27/06 at 1119 hours, Station 23 was dispatched for an automobile
accident on Newark Road south of Spencer Road in West Marlborough
Township. Within one minute, Assistant Chief 23 (Testa) and
Ambulance 23 were enroute. As Engine 23-1 responded with Lieutenant
23A (Carroll), Chester County Fireboard then upgraded the incident
to an auto accident with entrapment, added Medic 94, and changed
the location to Newark Road south of Bartram Road.
Asst. 23 located the accident on Newark Road between Spencer
and Bartram Roads in the "bad" curves. Two vehicles
had collided nearly head on in the middle of the curves and
it was determined that one patient was confined within one of
the vehicles. Asst. 23 assumed command while Deputy Chief 23
(Cole) took the "Newark Road CP". Ambulance 23 arrived
and began patient care. A second ambulance from Longwood Fire
Company was requested to transport the driver of the other vehicle.
Engine 23-1 arrived on the scene and the crew placed the Hurst
Combination Spreader/Cutter hydraulic rescue tool into service.
Under the direction of Asst. 23 and Lieutenant 23A the crew
removed the driver's door to extricate the patient. Once the
patient was removed they were packaged and transported to Christiana
Hospital with Ambulance 23 and Medic 94. The driver of the other
vehicle was transported by Longwood EMS to Chester County Hospital.
The crews cleared the roadway of debris and assisted with traffic
control until the vehicles were towed from the scene.
