Hay Fire on Cooper Rd.

At approximately 0630 hours on 10/14/06 the company was dispatched for a reported field fire in the 100 block of Cooper Road in New Garden Township. Chief 23 (Decker) responded to the area and was having difficulty locating the incident due to heavy fog conditions. The company was ready to recall when county received a call that hay was on fire at 123 Cooper Road. Chief 23 arrived and found a 100' X 50' X 12' pile of hay involved. Chief 23 assumed the "Cooper Command" and directed Assistant 23 (Testa) to take operations. Due to the location and weather conditions it was decided to let the pile burn itself out. Engines 23-1, 23-2, 23-3, and Tanker 23 stood by while several loaders and a bull dozer broke apart and leveled the pile to allow it to burn. Unfortunately, later in the day the wind began to pick up significantly which forced us to change our plan of attack. Under the direction of Deputy 23 (Cole), Firefighting Foam was applied to help extinguish the burning hay and the remnants of the pile were covered with earth for final extinguishment. Thanks to Engine 24-6, Deluge 24, Deputy 24, Tanker 22, Hockessin Tanker 19, Longwood Engine 25-2 for providing assistance and coverage during this day long incident.
