Tornado
Passes through the New Garden area

Around 3:30pm Tuesday afternoon a F-1 tornado
touched down in the area of Penn Green Road in the back yard
of Guizzetti Mushroom Farms. Fire company crews were on the
road immediately after the storm passed through the area investigating
the damage, and making sure everyone in the area was alright.
There were no reported injuries as a result of the storm. The
storm ripped the roof off of one of the Guizzetti mushroom houses.
The
storm was investigated the next day by the National Weather
Service, and they confirmed that it was in fact a F-1 Tornado.
A F-1 category tornado can have wind speeds of up to 73-122mph.
Only about 36% of confirmed tornados are reported to be of this
strength. The tornado that touched down in New Garden was reported
to have moved close to 30mph, 150 yards wide, and about 2 miles
long. The storm formed in the Penn Green road area and then
headed in the direction of Hockessin, Delaware. Company was
initially dispatched to assist the police department. AMB23
arrived on scene and set up command. While en route to the New
Garden Township building, Eng 23-1 was directed to go to Guizzetti
Mushroom Farms to investigate the situation with the reported
damage to buildings. Other units drove through out the area
searching for damage or anyone needing help.
