Working Fire South of the Border
Date: July 23, 2008
By: Deputy Chief Steve Cole Jr.
On Wednesday night at 1915 hours during our weekly work detail, the company was dispatched for an engine to assist New Castle County 19 (Hockessin) for a house struck by lighting in Tenby Chase. Engine(s) 23-2, 23-1, and Tanker 23 made the response at 1916 hours. Ambulance 23-1 was also requested to the scene by command for the fire standby.
Avondale units arrived at 1925 hours. Command requested Engine 23-2's crew under the command of Deputy 23 (Cole Jr.) to get a ladder from Tower 19 and set up to the rear of the residence. Crews made access to the roof, and assisted on getting the roof opened up using a quick vent saw. Once the roof was opened, crews had visible fire. Crews went into service with an 1 3/4" hand line and quickly knocked the fire out.
Engine 23-1's crew under the command of Asst. 23 (Testa) stood-by to the rear of the residence as a "RIT" for the roof operations.
Crews then assisted with overhaul, and salvage.
Avondale units were released by the command at 2028 hours.
Officers and members of Avondale Fire Company would like to thank the Kennett Fire Company for relocating an engine to Avondale while we worked at this incident.
