Company assists Kennett on Hay Bales

Date: March 08, 2009
By: Chief Hoseman Kenny Reed

On Sunday March 08, 2009, at 03:27 hours the Avondale Fire Company was dispacthed along with Longwood to assist Kennett (Station 24) in the 100 block of Chandler Mill Road in Kennett township on a hale bale fire. Engine 23-2 and Tanker 23 responded within minutes and before arrival was instructed by Chief 24 (Melton) to lay 5" hose from the hydrant on Chandler Mill to the fire scene. Engine 23-2 layed the 5" and rapidly deployed two 1 3/4" hand lines along with one 2 1/2" Blitzfire nozzle to protect exposure which consisted of a hedge row and house. Upon Tanker 23's arrival they supplied Eng. 24-6 with their water. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down it was decided to allow the pile to burn out on its own because of the massive amounts of water that it would take to extinguish the fire. The homeowner was using several loaders to push the pile together so further avoid the threat of the fire spreading. Avondale's crews were released just after daybreak leaving Kennett's crews on scene for a few more hours to monitor the fire and confirm that it wouldn't get out of control again.
