By: Firefighter Tim McDonnell

On December 3, 2009 at 07:31 hours Chester County Fireboard notified Chief 23 of a horse stuck in a well. Chief 23 (Swift) and Assistant 23 (Decker) reviewed the situation and notified the New Bolton Center and Blittersdorf Towing and Recovery. At 08:04 hours the Avondale Fire Company was alerted to proceed to the incident. Upon arrival crews from the Avondale Fire Company and The New Bolton Center found a horse stuck in a well approximately three feet deep by seven feet long. After using sledge hammers and pry bars, the Kennett Fire Company (Station 24) assisted us in the use of a jackhammer to break free one section of a concrete wall. Once that section of wall was removed, straps were secured under the horse then lifted just enough to free it from the well. Units were clear of the scene at 10:45 hours.
